Patient-Centered mHealth Companion
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) symptoms fluctuate day-to-day. We engineered Pulse-MS as a compassionate, highly accessible mobile wellness companion. Patients log daily symptom surveys, while an event-driven AWS Lambda backend analyzes responses to generate tailored lifestyle and wellness recommendations securely.
Project at a Glance
A wellness companion app for Multiple Sclerosis patients featuring daily surveys, visual progress tracking, and personalized health recommendations powered by serverless cloud functions.
Chronic Care Management & Patient Symptom Logging
Neurological Care Providers & MS Patients
Q2 - Q3
Consistent daily symptom tracking enabling patients and neurologists to correlate lifestyle triggers with flare-ups.
The Problem
Multiple Sclerosis patients struggle to convey long-term symptom trends during brief quarterly neurology visits. Memory recall fails to capture subtle flare-up triggers, fatigue spikes, or cognitive fog patterns over weeks.
Inaccurate symptom recall during infrequent clinical consultations.
Standard mobile interfaces are frustrating for patients experiencing motor fatigue or visual tremors.
Lack of actionable daily wellness guidance tailored to current symptom severity.
Strict health data privacy compliance required for cloud symptom storage.
Goals
Technical Goals
- Accessible React Native mobile client adhering to WCAG AAA contrast and touch targets.
- Offline-capable Redux state engine storing daily survey progress during connectivity loss.
- Serverless AWS Lambda microservices evaluating survey scores in under 500ms.
- HIPAA-compliant encrypted DynamoDB schema storing anonymized patient metrics.
Business Goals
- Empower patients with immediate, personalized self-care recommendations.
- Generate longitudinal PDF health dossiers exportable for neurologist visits.
- Achieve a 70%+ 30-day daily survey retention rate among active users.
My Role
Lead Mobile & Cloud Engineer
Core Responsibilities
- Architected the cross-platform React Native client with accessible ergonomic UI components.
- Constructed Redux state stores managing survey forms, session persistence, and sync queues.
- Designed AWS Lambda event handlers processing incoming survey JSON payloads.
- Built the personalized recommendation engine mapping symptom severities to wellness content.
Primary Focus Areas
Solution
Pulse-MS provides an intuitive 60-second daily survey capturing fatigue, mobility, pain, and mood. Once submitted, an AWS Lambda pipeline evaluates the multidimensional score vector, indexes trends against the patient's personal baseline, and triggers tailored content delivery.
Accessible Survey Engine
Large high-contrast touch targets with haptic feedback designed specifically for users experiencing tremors.
Serverless Recommendation Core
AWS Lambda runs algorithmic scoring to recommend gentle stretches, cooling techniques, or rest schedules.
Longitudinal Trend Visualizer
Clear line graphs and calendar heatmaps illustrating symptom correlations with weather and sleep.
Architecture & Data Flow
Lightweight serverless architecture connecting React Native mobile clients, Redux offline storage, AWS API Gateway, and Lambda processing functions.
Daily Survey Entry
React Native / ReduxPatient completes brief symptom assessment; Redux caches responses locally.
Encrypted API Dispatch
API Gateway / HTTPSSurvey payload transmitted over TLS to AWS API Gateway with JWT patient token.
Serverless Lambda Scoring
AWS Lambda (Node.js)Lambda evaluates symptom thresholds and computes tailored wellness guidance.
Secure Persistence & Push
DynamoDB / AWS SNSEncrypted scores saved in DynamoDB; tailored guidance dispatched back to mobile app.
Core Features
60-Second Daily Survey
Low-fatigue designQuick, non-fatiguing assessment tracking energy, mobility, mood, and sleep with minimal cognitive friction.
Tailored Recommendation Feed
Personalized adviceDelivers evidence-based self-care advice (hydration reminders, cooling protocols) based on current symptoms.
Longitudinal Progress Charts
Visual trend heatmapsVisual weekly and monthly trend graphs mapping symptom severity against external variables.
Clinical Visit Export Summary
Doctor-ready PDFGenerates a 1-page PDF summary highlighting flare-up frequencies for discussion with treating neurologists.
Engineering Decisions
AWS Lambda Serverless vs Always-On EC2 Backend
Why: Survey submissions occur in sharp morning and evening bursts; serverless scaling reduced idle cloud hosting costs to virtually zero.
Redux Offline-First Caching
Why: Ensured patients in rural areas or during hospital visits could record entries without connection drops losing their progress.
Challenges
Fine Motor Tremors Causing Accidental Taps: Patients frequently triggered incorrect slider values on small screens.
Redesigned slider components into large stepped tactile cards with vibration confirmation and confirmation delays.
Reduced survey input errors by over 80%.
